EcogeneTopic Page
TopicPage for Blue Native 2D PAGE (Lasserre) of Escherichia coli K-12
 | 2D PAGE Protein Complexes          |
Description:
Lasserre (2006) identified 50 heteromultimeric (labeled Cmplx1-50 in EcoGene) and 256 homomultimeric
(labeled Cmplx51-306 in EcoGene) complexes
using two-dimensional blue native/SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
(Blue Native 2D PAGE), followed by spot identification using mass spectrometry methods.
They separated membrane (Mem) and cytoplasmic (Cyt) fractions.
The GenePages for the 297 proteins
involved in these 306 complexes have links to this TopicPage. Lasserre
et al., 2006, refer to "all the protein complexes of the cell" as the
complexome, i.e. the end result of interactome of stable protein-protein interactions.
Some proteins were found in more than one complex. This appears to be
due, in part, to complexes partitioning to both membrane and
cytoplasmic fractions using this procedure The authors point out
several limitations of the method, including the identification of some
sub-complexes included in this set of E. coli complexes.
Details:
Data for this Topic are derived from Tables in Lasserre (2006).
Homomultimeric Complexes are denoted as HM and Heteromultimeric
Complexes are denoted as HT. Cmplx1-50 are heteromultimeric complexes
from Table 1 (#1-18, known HT complexes) and Table 2 (#19-50, newly
identified HT complexes). Cmplx51-306 are homomultimeric complexes from
Table 3 (#230-306, newly identified HM complexes) and the Supplementary
Table (#51-229, previously identified as being in an HM complex).
